Cleaning of Lake Kopa, Kokshetau

Abstract: The most important task of the city of Kokshetau is cleaning of the Lake Kopa. The urban sewage was continuously drained of to the lake, which consequently caused a gradual deterioration of water quality and a tendency to eutrophication. Massive development of biomass leads to increased accumulation of sediments. Based on realised measurements, the current thickness of sediments is about 0,8 m.

In the context of this project, the ecological situation of the lake was analysed. Satellite data and results of hydrochemical and hydrogeological investigations were used to develop possible methods of cleaning the lake. Additional recommendations were formulated to prevent further pollution of the catchment area and to achieve long-term improvement the situation.
